The Gatekeepers Cottage is the HQ of the Ballarat BotaniKids of the The Friends of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Each year at the Begonia Festival the group of volunteers provides activities for visitors and families based on learning more about botany and nature.
2023 is no exception. Activities are fee however they do ask for a small donation to towards the programs this year. Card facilities available.
Activities may include outdoor potless potting of seeds and seedlings, water play with tubs jugs pipes and funnels depending on a local scout and cubs group helping.
The verandah at the front of the Cottage will be set up as two giant day beds for relaxing and reading for a time out space for young families.
Inside the Cottage investigate a range of botanical collections under the new digital microscope
A wonderful display with demos of propagating of species Begonias by the local members of the Begonia Society.
A nature Table of weird and wonderful plants for children Table activities or young children with paper and pencils.
Welcomes and assists people who have challenges with learning, communication, understanding and behaviour. (includes people with autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, acquired brain injury (ABI), dyslexia and dementia)
Caters for people who are blind or have vision loss.
Caters for people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
Caters for people with sufficient mobility to climb a few steps but who would benefit from fixtures to aid balance. (This includes people using walking frames and mobility aids)
Caters for people who use a wheelchair.
Caters for people with high support needs who travel with a support person.
Caters for people with allergies and intolerances.
