Spherophtye
Towering at 6.5m tall Spherophyte is a kinetic sculpture with 48 moving arms in nine groups by artist Alex Sanson.
Spherophyte was inspired by meditative breathing and created to be simultaneously mesmerising and energetic, contemplative and euphoric and above all to generate a sense of captivating wonder. The sculpture features integrated lighting and is most impressive at night. Spherophyte operates for approximately 12 hours per day from 10am to 10pm, weather dependent.
Artist’s Statement
I love creating sculpture with a hypnotic motion that tries to induce a sense of joy and engagement with the world around us. I’m very excited to install Spherophyte in central Ballarat and hope that it may elicit moments of peacefulness, delight and imagination.
